BSN Admission Requirements

First Year Students (Freshmen)

First-year students are admitted directly to the McAuley School of Nursing from high school. Applicants to the BSN program must meet the University's general entrance requirements of an overall cumulative GPA of 2.5 and minimum scores of 21 on the ACT or 1000 on the SAT if completed before May 9, 2016 (1060 on the SAT if completed May 9, 2016 or after).

In addition, they should have completed at least the following preparatory high school courses:

  • Four units of English
  • Two units of laboratory science (chemistry and biology)
  • Two units of mathematics
  • Two units of history or social science

All students seeking admissions to this program must pass a criminal background check and drug screening.

Transfer Applicants

Students may transfer into the BSN curriculum from other programs within Detroit Mercy, or may come from outside the University (a typical example is a person coming from a community college).

Admissions requirements for transfer students include the following:

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. A 3.0 or higher will keep you competitive
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in all science pre-requisite courses
  • 24 or more college credits
  • A minimum composite score of 75% (one retake is allowed) on the HESI Admission Examination is required. The test includes: math, reading, grammar, vocabulary, anatomy and physiology along with learning and personality styles
    • NOTE: this test is offered to Detroit Mercy applicants only. Copies of test results will not be provided for other institutions.
  • Completion of the nine pre-reqs listed below:
    1. Anatomy & Physiology 1
    2. Anatomy & Physiology 2
    3. Microbiology
    4. Introductory Chemistry for the Health Sciences or Introduction to Biochemistry
    5. Intermediate Algebra
    6. English Composition 2
    7. Introduction to Psychology
    8. Introduction to Sociology
    9. Nutrition

These prerequisite courses must be transferred in or taken at Detroit Mercy. Students may transfer up to 63 credits.

Transfer students: Please consult the Nursing Transfer Equivalency Table for information about which components of your previous coursework will transfer to Detroit Mercy.
