Course Descriptions
This course provides the registered nurse with an overview of the historical, current and future trends and issues in the profession of nursing and how nursing contributes to healthcare outcomes. Emphasis is placed on the evolution of nursing knowledge, theory, practice and research. A major portion of content will explore the history, application, benefits and challenges of technology in the workplace.
NUR 342 Advanced Health Assessment for the RN 2 credits
This course focuses on the multidimensional process of health assessment of individuals and families including history taking and physical examination, as well as developmental, cultural, spiritual and family assessment which will guide the nurse in the health promotion and disease management of the client. Students will have the opportunity to refine and expand health assessment skills related to data collection and physical examination for their professional development.
NUR 338 Pathophysiology 4 credits
This course focuses on the study of disease, its causes, and the body changes which accompany it. Specific diseases are discussed, including the pathogenesis as well as the morphological and physiological basis of the manifestation of each disease. Treatment of each disorder, including the rationale of the therapy, is also discussed. The course looks at the total body and how a disease can affect each body system.
NUR 360 Nursing Research and its Utilization in Health Care 3 credits
This course explores nursing research and its utilization in health care within the context of scientific merit and clinical relevance. Following an overview of the research process, emphasis is placed on its use in solving clinical problems, enhancing clinical judgments, and/or measuring phenomena in clinical practice.
NUR 420 Intervening with Families and Aggregates at Risk 3 credits
This course focuses on crisis intervention and management in the health promotion, illness prevention, and mental health nursing care of families and aggregates at risk and in crisis in the community. A family eco-system approach is taken to explore family dynamics within a sociocultural and community context. Major public health and social justice issues, such as domestic violence, child/adolescent/sexual/elder abuse, substance abuse, and homelessness are explored, along with health illness crisis facing families across the age continuum.
NUR 443 The Community as Resource and Partner 3 credits
This course focuses on students exploring the community and the development of partnerships from an assets-based approach, as a means to deliver health care in a constantly changing environment. The urban impact of global health concerns in identified aggregates with special emphasis on environmental issues is examined. Epidemiological principles and public health policy in relation to health problems within a specific community are explored.
NUR 447 Leadership for Change for the RN 3 credits
This course focuses on leadership and management within a changing health care environment. Organizational leadership/management theories are presented allowing students to complete an organizational analysis of their health care system. Concepts such as strategic planning, change management, quality management, fiscal management, human relations skill development and project management are emphasized.
NUR 448 Project Management for the RN 4 credits
This integrated practicum experience focuses on the cumulative analysis of nursing knowledge, skills and reflective approaches in transitioning to a professional baccalaureate nursing role. This integrated experience enhances and integrates theoretical learning related to nursing leadership and management and the concepts of working in a team for the purpose of health promotion and disease management. The student will complete 126 practicum hours examining issues facing nursing practice today such as ethical and social justice challenges, role transition, team building, conflict management, delegation with cost and quality outcomes in application of project management skills. The ultimate goal of the student is the development of a project geared for a specific community population.
ETH 358 Health Care Ethics 3 credits
This course is an examination of moral issues in health care delivery, health care policy, and biomedical research. Discussion will focus on moral theories, principles and values and their application to such issues as professional-patient relationships, euthanasia, abortion, human experimentation, and access to health care.
HSA 461 Health Care Economics 3 credits
This course introduces the student to the fundamental concepts of economics as it applies to the health care environment and how it influences health professionals. The student is provided with an overview of the health care service market and an understanding of the role that consumers and providers play in this market. Analysis of economic policy and access issues that arise in the health care environment.
