    Become a peer educator

The CHP-MSON Student Empowerment Zone trains and pays and trains peer educators to assist other CHP-MSON students. There are many reasons to become a peer educator.  Email Assistant Dean Yvonne King now to get started!  Our peer educators enjoy:

    • Pay – This is a paid position!
    • Training and skill development – As a peer educator, you’ll receive comprehensive training and skill development opportunities. You’ll learn effective teaching/learning techniques and gain valuable experience in facilitating educational sessions.
    • Enhanced résumé and future opportunities – Being a peer educator will enhance your résumé and can open doors to future opportunities. You’ll develop transferable skills such as leadership, communication, teamwork and problem-solving – all desirable in a variety of career settings!
    • Personal and professional growth – Not only do peer educators improve their personal and professional skills – like communication, leadership, and problem-solving – but you also develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Nothing solidifies your own learning like helping others with the material.
    • Making a difference – Being a peer educator is your opportunity to positively impact the lives of your fellow students. You will be increasing your own success, that of your fellow students, and even that of the College and University by helping build a supportive community! As the already-strong reputation and well-being of CHP-MSON and its students improve, so does the value of and reputation of your Detroit Mercy degree.
    • Networking and building supportive connections – Peer educators build strong connections and supportive networks with like-minded individuals. There is a sense of belonging and camaraderie that comes from being part of a team working towards a common goal. And it certainly doesn’t hurt to go into your career knowing lots of other health professionals you helped along the way!

Alumni: give back and become a mentor!

Serving as a mentor to a current CHP-MSON student feels good, and it comes with lots of benefits. Mentoring up-and-coming health professionals is about more than sharing knowledge. You’ll also help mentees identify their goals, and you’ll be able to empower and encourage them to navigate the challenges you once faced, and help them succeed. Alumni mentors enjoy:

    • A chance to make a positive impact in the world – By sharing your knowledge, skills, and experience with current students, you make a real difference, helping guide and support them in their academic and career journeys.
    • Flexibility – As a mentor, you tailor your time commitment and scheduling to your availability. Even small contributions of your time and expertise can make a significant difference in the lives of students!
    • Professional development and networking – Serving as an alumni mentor can expand your professional network and provide opportunities for your own personal and career growth. Every student you mentor created a solid connection with other soon-to-be alumni and industry professionals. These connections create potential for new career opportunities and collaborations down the road – not to mention friendships.
    • Recognition and respect from your professional peers – Your service as a mentor is something everyone can appreciate, not least your employers and colleagues.  It shows you care enough to have made a commitment to improving the health care industry in a real way.  Plus, you’ll enjoy the appreciation of the College & School for your role in supporting and shaping the next generation of CHP-MSON graduates!
    • Increase the prestige of your degree – CHP-MSON alumni mentors are key to building a supportive community in our College & School, which in turn improves not only student outcomes, but the reputation of the health professions and nursing programs at Detroit Mercy. As the already-strong outcomes and reputation of CHP-MSON improve, so does the reputation of your Detroit Mercy degree!
