Internship and research – high-impact learning
UDM's Sports & Exercise Sciences program provides a hands-on education – where you’ll engage in meaningful, real-world experiences as part of your curriculum, gain practical skills and connect what you learn in the classroom to the challenges you’ll face in your career.
As an SPE student, you'll work an internship as part of the program. You'll also take part in research. Similar high-impact learning may include community projects or collaborative activities where you and other students tackle real-world problems.
-
Interprofessional education for better teamwork
Interprofessional education is an instructional approach that brings you together with students from different disciplines, to help you understand and respect other professions.
By learning how each discipline contributes to maximizing results, you'll have a career advantage: you'll be prepared to work better in teams and collaborate successfully in real-life sports, fitness and healthcare settings.

UDM's values
We are proud of the values at the heart of our institution – you'll discover that this is one of the best and most important parts of your Detroit Mercy education. UDM’s religious sponsors – the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) and the Religious Sisters of Mercy – share a vision of giving each student like you the individual attention you need to become a competent, compassionate leader, ready to serve in a vulnerable world.
At UDM, we don't just teach you book knowledge and job skills. We also work to integrate your intellectual, spiritual, ethical and social development. You’ll learn respect for all voices, especially those that are often muted. In a UDM education, moral and ethical issues are considered alongside academic and professional ones.
And while the Sports & Exercise Sciences program focuses on preparing you for a successful career, we also know that compassion is what changes society and the world, and professional ethics are what make a true leader. Learn more about UDM's values-based education.
Detroit Mercy is an independent Catholic university, which means you are surrounded by faculty and administrators who know you, listen to you, care about your well-being and provide you with personal attention to help you succeed. At UDM, we don't just create graduates, we care for you as a whole person ("cura personalis"). In addition to excellent education, that's a key part of our heritage and mission.
