Your launchpad for a health-related career!

Bachelor of Science in Health Science

Across the globe, career opportunities in healthcare are skyrocketing. And for decades, UDM has enjoyed an excellent reputation in nursing and pre-medicine programs. Now, Detroit Mercy also offers the Health Sciences program, where the quality of a UDM education extends to an even wider range of healthcare career choices.

With so many growing health-related fields, you might know exactly what you want to pursue. Or maybe you have only a general interest in healthcare and want some time to explore your options. In both cases, the HLS program – customizable with minors, concentrations and electives – offers you a strong starting point for a fulfilling career in health and wellness.

What is Health Sciences at UDM?

Detroit Mercy’s Health Sciences program (HLS) is for people who want to take advantage of the expanding opportunities in healthcare, whether you:

  • want to move directly into a career helping improve people’s health
  • plan to go on to graduate study, such as in occupational therapy, physical therapy or another discipline
  • envision a non-healthcare career – such as in business, law, social work, marketing, administration, etc. – where health knowledge is a valuable advantage

Rooted in evidence-based practice and ethical principles, UDM's market-smart program emphasizes a holistic approach to understanding human health and wellness. As a Health Sciences graduate, you’ll be able to use advanced scientific knowledge and various culturally-appropriate methodologies to address global health challenges with integrity and empathy.

The HLS program is delivered via a mix of in-person and online instruction. It leads to the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree. Core topics include:

    • Choose a minor or concentration with your HLS major, such as in population health, digital health or sports management.
    • Take electives to satisfy prerequisites for graduate studies, such as in occupational therapy, physical therapy or a range of other disciplines.
Detroit Mercy's program is designed to provide you with the flexibility that empowers you to quickly and efficiently get the education you need to achieve the future you want. The HLS curriculum even provides room to fulfill the prerequisites of medical school, dental school, a physician assistant program, etc.
  •

Internship and research – high-impact learning

UDM's Health Sciences program provides you with hands-on education, where you’ll engage in meaningful, real-world experiences as part of your curriculum. You’ll not only gain practical skills, but also connect what you learn in the classroom to the challenges you’ll face in your career.

As an HLS student, you'll work an internship as part of the program. You'll also take part in research. Similar high-impact learning may include community projects or collaborative activities where you and other students tackle real-world problems.

  •

    Interprofessional education for better teamwork

Interprofessional education is an instructional approach that brings you together with students from different healthcare disciplines, to help you understand and respect other professions.

By learning how each discipline contributes to healthy outcomes for patients, you'll have a career advantage: you'll be prepared to work better in teams and collaborate successfully in real-life healthcare settings.

    UDM's values

We are proud of the values at the heart of our institution – you'll discover that this is one of the best and most important parts of your Detroit Mercy education. UDM’s religious sponsors – the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) and the Religious Sisters of Mercy – share a vision of giving each student like you the individual attention you need to become a competent, compassionate leader, ready to serve in a vulnerable world.

At UDM, we don't just teach you book knowledge and job skills. We also work to integrate your intellectual, spiritual, ethical and social development. You’ll learn respect for all voices, especially those that are often muted. In a UDM education, moral and ethical issues are considered alongside academic and professional ones.

And while the HLS program focuses on preparing you for a successful career, we also know that compassion is what changes society and the world, and professional ethics are what make a true leader. Learn more about UDM's values-based education.

Detroit Mercy is an independent Catholic university, which means you are surrounded by faculty and administrators who know you, listen to you, care about your well-being and provide you with personal attention to help you succeed. At UDM, we don't just create graduates, we care for you as a whole person ("cura personalis"). In addition to excellent education, that's a key part of our heritage and mission.

Opportunities for Health Sciences graduates

Healthcare remains a fast-growing field. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says, “Overall employment in healthcare occupations is projected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations from 2023 to 2033.”*

UDM's Health Sciences program leads to both employment and graduate study. HLS can be your starting point for a wide variety of health-related careers, including in the so-called "allied health" areas – see a partial list below. And this list does not include the many other career directions that may not be directly about healthcare, but would benefit from a strong understanding of health issues, such as business, communications or law.

HLS is also designed to be a strong option if you want to pursue graduate study for a master's or doctoral degree, such as in the areas listed below.

About 1.9 million openings are projected each year, on average, in healthcare occupations.
