Managing diabetes can be a challenging task. Join us to focus on your diabetes care and well-being, with information sessions, free health check-ups, and giveaways. The event is free and open to the public, and the first 50 participants will receive gift cards! See below for registration information.
This annual Diabetes Health Education Workshop will take place on Sunday, May 7, 2023, from noon to 4:30 p.m. at DABO's Sheffield Center at 12048 Grand River in Detroit (see map). The event is hosted by University of Detroit Mercy’s College of Health Professions, School of Dentistry and Titan Equity Nourishment Network (TENN), in collaboration with Taste the Local Difference Michigan and Detroit Association of Black Organizations (DABO).
Topics
Educators and health experts will discuss and share information on a variety of diabetes topics including:
- the effects of diabetes on the body
- eating healthy
- easy-to-follow activities to get yourself moving
- dental health
- skin and foot care
- diabetes and mental health

Services and giveaways
TENN is excited to provide bags of nutritious produce along with recipes from Eastern Market Partnership to help you in your journey of diabetes self-management.
Free health check-ups will be provided under the Blueprint for Wellness® Program. Blueprint for Wellness® is a clinical set of laboratory tests to give individuals a clear picture of their overall health so they can act on specific risks.
COVID vaccines and boosters will be available.
The first 50 participants will receive gift cards.

Sessions
Here are some of the planned sessions for this event:
- Food Access - Information on agencies and resources in the area that provide free food, healthy recipes, and food for participants to take home.
- Healthy Eating: A Diabetes Self-management Skill - Learn more about basic diabetes nutritional tips that can keep your blood sugar more stable, help you to feel satisfied, and discuss ways to slowly make change in your nutritional habits.
- Benefits of Plant-based Diet - Evidence-based diabetic education, including how a plant-based diet can be beneficial and aid in controlling fasting blood glucose levels. Plus, a culturally relevant exercise program.
- What Does That Number Mean? - What is a normal blood sugar? What is a Hemoglobin A1c? Why is knowing my blood pressure so important? BMI what? Learn more about what these numbers mean and what your number goals are. We'll measure your weight, height, calculate a BMI, explain lab values and measure your blood pressure.
- Diabetic Eye Care - Diabetes affects all organs throughout body; the eyes are no exception. Diabetes can lead to issues including permanent vision loss. Learn about how to monitor eye health over time to best protect and preserve your sight.
